HMS Fisgard (Hulks)

The following two pictures were sent in by Dave Clark. They show his grandfather, Arthur Clark and his first draft to HMS Cambrian. Dave has this to say about him: My Great Grandfather was the Chief Engineer of Abbey Mills pumping station. (Part of the Victorian sewage pumping system designed by Bazalgette, for the City of London). The pumps were beam engines, and he would have been used to steam plant and overseeing workers. As a young man he grew up in the Engineers house on site at Abbey Mills. Later the family moved to Colney Hatch Lane (by Alexandra Palace). The house was built by his father and was the first house in the street to be wired for electricity. So its not surprising having completed an engineering apprenticeship somewhere in London, that when the war came he went to the Royal Navy as an artificer. The picture of him in uniform was taken in Muswell Hill, North London, probably when he had first passed out from initial training. I also have the original training notebook on oil fuel firing which he undertook on Fisgard IV. I scanned and sent a few pages from this also (see above).

He was an ERA3 in 1916, when he joined HMS Cambrian, a light cruiser of the 4th Light Cruiser Squadron. The Xmas Day picture was taken on the Iceland Patrol - somewhere between Scapa & Iceland. I added the poem, which is from 'Fringes of The Fleet' , by Rudyard Kipling, first published in 1916. On a whimsical note I remember my Dad telling me Grandfather completed his training and was issued with tropical kit - and then sent to Cambrian for the aforementioned Iceland Patrol. Twas ever thus!!!
